The original cocktail — quite literally. Bourbon, bitters, a touch of sugar, and an orange peel. A slow-sipping classic and the go-to pour for cocktail hours and evening receptions at the events we bartend.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey
  • 0.25 oz demerara or simple syrup (or 1 sugar cube)
  • 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Dash of orange bitters (optional)
  • Orange peel for garnish
  • Large ice cube

HOW WE MAKE IT

Add syrup, bitters, and a splash of whiskey to a rocks glass.

Stir briefly to combine.

Add a large ice cube and the rest of the whiskey.

Stir for 20–30 seconds to chill and dilute.

Express an orange peel over the drink, rub it on the rim, and drop it in.
